What's the point of Roboform online backup

I’ve just upgraded my copy of Roboform to 6.9.93 and I noticed the following in the release notes.

“RoboForm Online Beta has been released, an easy automated way to synchronize and backup your Passcards, Identities and Safenotes via RoboForm Online server. Free for RoboForm Pro users.”

I thought this sounded quite a good way to backup all my RF data and sync between my work and home computers so I went to the RF online backup page to read more. roboformonlinebackup.com

Firstly it mentions that it’s free to use for the first 10 items and then you need to pay $9.99. But from reading the release notes above it says “free for Roboform pro users” so I assume the $9.99 is only for people that are using the free version of Roboform, can anyone confirm this?

Now for the real reason for my post. On the roboformonlinebackup site it says “*NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT STORE SENSITIVE DATA.”. Huh surely by it’s very nature if your using Roboform it’s going to contain sensitive date, that’s the whole point. I have my identities which contain a lot of personal information, logins with passwords and safenotes which contain other sensitive information. I would have to think twice about storing all my passcards etc on a remote server run by someone else anyway, even if they are password protected, but by adding this disclaimer it makes me wonder what use this service has, anyone got any comments?

Hi reck, I think you went to the wrong roboform online backup page, that one was not the official one. This is the real one: http://online.roboform.com/

I didn't see any mention regarding a current cost, but they let you use it only if you have a valid Roboform Pro license on the computer you're synchronizing (so if you're synchronizing with your laptop, you'll need a license for that too):

You can sync your passwords to as many computers as you have RoboForm Pro licenses for (1 license per computer). Each computer will need to have RoboForm Pro installed. There is no additional fee to use RoboForm Online at this time

They might charge for it in the future (when it's out of the Beta though).

I tried finding out something about the reliability, but only this is mentioned:

Siber Systems has been developing and supporting RoboForm for the past 10 years. Our servers are based at a world-class secure facility with 24x7 support and 99.99% uptime

I wish they gave more details about how secure those servers are. Oh, and you can store online your files as long as the total size of the storage doesn't exceed 10Mb.

Ah ok I got the wrong site, thanks for clearing that up master robo.

It does still concern though about uploading my most confidential\sensitive data to a remote server somewhere. I do like the idea of backing up and syncing my rf data though. From what you wrote above the reliability sounds ok it's just the over all security of the thing that worries me.

reck, i'm with you. I would be concerned about backing up online such sensitive information, and in order to do that they would have to convince me more than with a "word-class secure facility" mention. I mean, I would like to hear something like (taken from http://www.thebunker.net/security_shield):

"The facility sits 30m beneath a perimeter fenced, 18 acre site. It has three metre thick concrete walls, solid steel doors that weigh several tonnes, and provides military grade EMP and tempest shielding. The facility is also protected by a 24-hour sentry and MOD-trained guard dogs, CCTV and a series of sophisticated access controls"

This would make me very confident, but until then, regular roboform backups to an external drive should be enough for me.

Yeah that sounds pretty secure. Maybe if they just added at the bottom "The facility is patrolled nightly by Jack Bauer and James Bond and anyone attempting to gain access to the facility will be dealt with promptly" Then I would have no problem uploading my roboform data.
