I think it's a bug. It make a little sense to let only administrators change the Security options, but that should be disallowed on 32bit/64bit too and through both options. However I still don't know why they would need to protect it this way since you can create different user profiles.

Anyway, they also have an enterprise edition and maybe they had requirements for this from other companies, but still seems like a half-feature.

Well its been quiet from Roboform support for a while but today I've received another reply.

"RoboForm starts Options via 'RunAs Admin' command because some options that you can change in RoboForm Options Dialog need administatator privilege."

Now this reply makes a lot more sense to me than the previous replies from them. But there are still some unanswered questions.

If some of the Roboform options requires admin privileges how come it can be opened via the identities.exe command and changes made without the need for admin rights? Maybe there is one or two particular options there do require admin rights that i've not tried yet, but if this is the case why lock the whole options dialog out from standard users. It would make more sense to open the dialog as a standard user, then, if the user makes a change that require admin rights prompt at that point.

Why does windows vista 64bit need admin privs but vista 32bit and Windows XP don't?

I've been recommending Roboform to a few people at work who have purchased it. It's not a problem getting an admin to install it but it is a problem to call an admin whenever you want to alter a setting.

Thanks for sharing what the said. It's probably not worth trying any other workarounds (like forcing your browser to work as a 32-bit app), and maybe they'll fix something. Good thing you don't need to open Options that many times

Opening/Editing passcards/identities and safenotes does not trigger the UAC prompt, only the options window. This is another reason why it seems strange that it's being triggered for the options but nothing else within Roboform. Also why does it get triggered when opening it from Roboform but not from the run windows, shortcuts etc.

I've not heard anything back from Roboform support regarding this in a few days. They said it was because I'm using a 64-bit version of a web browser with 32-bit Roboform, but as you can see i'm not even using a browser when opening the options window and besides I am using a 32-bit copy of Firefox.

Did you try to "mute" uac with tweakuac?

Strangely if I run this command directly it opens up the RF options without the UAC prompt

Does the UAC prompt also shows when opening the Edit Passcards/Identities through Start-Programs-AI Roboform? I was thinking that in the Start menu you actually have shortcuts and you could replace the Edit Identities one with the link with params that you said it doesn't trigger UAC, but this would mean you'll have to go through Start... to open it.

I also use a type-and-open sort of program called enso launch, http://www.humanized.com/enso/launcher/ (free), which lets you type characters and have a program opened, so if you feel it comfortable to type identities and have your custom shortcut opened, might be something useful. However, these solutions are way off base, so maybe the Roboform support team would provide a solution (or a fix).

Unfortunately your suggestion didn't fix the problem. Thanks for the replay though. Just have wait to see what RF support come back with, i'm not holding out much hope though.

Hi Claudiu, yes it seems that the identities.exe with an extra switch opens the roboform options. The exact command is “C:\Program Files (x86)\AI RoboForm\Identities.exe -op pw=0 as=0”.

Strangely if I run this command directly it opens up the RF options without the UAC prompt, it's only when I try and open the options via the Roboform icon (either in the browser or system tray) that I get this annoying prompt.

I've been in contact with Roboform support but so far their replies haven't helped.

- Run the "Set correct file permissions" option.
Which has nothing to do with this problem.

- Run a 32-bit version of the web browser.
I already run a 32-bit version of Firefox so this doesn't help. In fact I only open RF options via the system tray not a web browser.

For me this is just an annoyance but it also means that people who user standard windows accounts will no longer be able to open RF options without the help of an administrator on 64-bit systems.

Claudiu, I didn't know you get turn off UAC for specific processes. I'll take a look at your link and see if it helps.

Thanks.

The process for the taskbaricon is robotaskbaricon.exe, and the ones for the options is identities.exe
I think a solution would be to try adding these processes as exceptions in the UAC list (I don't have vista 64 to test this, but you might give it a try). This guy here explains how to add a specific program to the exception list: How to disable the User Account Control Prompt for a certain application only

Now, if that doesn't work, another solution would be to tweak UAC to be silent (just like you would mute a barking dog, the dog still protects you just you don't hear it) using TwearkUAC from Winability: TweakUAC for Windows Vista

Let us know if any of these options worked. Thanks!

I've been using Vista x32 with Roboform for a while now. I run under a standard user account with UAC turned on. Today I changed my system over to Vista x64 and the account I'm using is an admin account, again I have UAC turned on. The problem I have is that since changing over to vista x64 every time I go into Roboform options (click icon in system tray and select options) I get an annoying UAC prompt telling me a program needs my permission to continue and I have to click continue to get into the options dialogue.

This is very annoying and I don't understand why UAC is prompting now but when running Vista x32 with UAC turned on I never got bothered. I'm not going to turn UAC off so thought I'd run it by you guys to see if you can offer any suggestions on how I can go straight into the options without UAC bothering me. Cheers.
